Following a Freedom of Information request, the BBC have learned that more than 1,700 cases surrounding abusive messages sent either by text or online reached Britain’s courts last year – a 10% increase on 2011. Figures also show that almost 600 cases have been brought to courts between January and May this year. Police are currently investigating allegations of abusive tweets sent to an MP and feminist campaigner. People sending ‘grossly offensive’ or ‘indecent, obscene or menacing’ messages can be prosecuted.
