There always seems to be speculation about cell phone radiation risks and the potential harm this could have on human health, but unfortunately this is not the only issue. Toxic materials in phones are also seen as a health hazard – as throwaway culture in the tech world leads to chemicals such as Lead, Cadmium and Bromine ending up in our environment – and potentially in our bloodstream.

Research by CompareMyMobile shows that around 140 million phones will end up in landfill in 2013 – equating to 80,000lbs of Lead leaking into our earth.Lead has been linked to brain damage in humans. This is just one reason the site believes mobile phone recycling is so important. Unfortunately, with half of the UK population unaware that you can actually recycle old handsets, the gadget recycling world is left with the mammoth task of educating half a country on these facts – and that’s just the beginning.

This infographic shows the kinds of toxic materials in handsets and the potential health risks cell phones can have if not disposed of properly. CompareMyMobile felt that by bringing information from sources such as Science Daily,Natural Health 365 andHealthyStuff.org all together in one place, it would be able to raise awareness and spread the word on how potentially damaging these toxins could be – both for the environment and our health.

The site knows that if old handsets are recycled properly with legitimate, accredited recyclers, thematerials can be kept out of our environment andphone health risks can be minimised. It hopes that by raising awareness of toxic mobile health risks, consumers will make a change and dispose of their old electronics in the right way.
